Bell is finalist for Minnesota Book Award

鶹ƵAPK alumna Jokeda “JoJo” Bell has been named a finalist for the 2025 Minnesota Book Awards. Her book Red Stained: The Life of Hilda Simms, which was published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press in 2024, is nominated in the General Nonfiction category. The book traces the life and legacy of Minneapolis-born actress and activist Hilda Simms, who rose to national fame in the 1940s Broadway hit Anna Lucasta. In addition to chronicling Simms’ groundbreaking career, Red Stained highlights Black history in Minnesota, including vital institutions like the Phyllis Wheatley House, which served as a cornerstone of African American community life in North Minneapolis. Bell’s work sheds light on mid-century struggles for representation and equity in the arts, while honoring Simms’ enduring legacy and the broader cultural contributions of Black Minnesotans.

Jokeda graduated from 鶹ƵAPK with a BA in History in 2007, and is now completing a PhD through the University of Minnesota. She serves as President of The African American Interpretive Center of Minnesota.
