As Winter weather moves in, we want to remind everyone to use extra care as you are walking on campus. Many cold-weather injuries are the result of falls on ice-covered streets, sidewalks, and parking lots. Use the following tips to minimize injury:
- Avoid looking at your phone while you are in motion.
- Anticipate changing conditions–hour to hour, day to day.
- Wear boots or other slip-resistant footwear.
- Be sure your winter gear doesn't block your vision or reduce your hearing.
- Be prepared for black-ice formation after melting occurs.
- Exercise caution when getting in and out of vehicles.
- Watch for slippery floors when entering buildings.
- Carry small loads. Keep hands empty so arms are free to move for stabilization. Use backpacks if possible.
- Move at a pace suitable for the walking surface you are on and the tasks you are doing.
- Walk with your feet pointed slightly outward.
- Make slow, wide turns at corners.
- Report all falls to supervisors, Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK Public Safety, and Benefits.
