Richard Pelster-Wiebe

Richard Pelster-Wiebe makes movies that combine elements of documentary, collage, sound art, and the essay. In addition to teaching at Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK, he has worked with students at the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop, Macalester College, FilmNorth, and was a Distinguished Visiting Writer in Digital Storytelling at Cornell College. Richard’s teaching and moviemaking are influenced by interests in DIY methods of production, deep listening, history, memory, and the fragility of life.

Richard is the recipient of grants from the Jerome Foundation, the McKnight Foundation, the Princess Grace Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board, and the Iowa Arts Council. His award-winning work has screened widely at international venues including IFF Rotterdam, Media City Film Festival (Windsor/Detroit), FIDMarseille, Milwaukee Underground Film Festival, Festival du nouveau cinéma (Montreal), UnionDocs Center for Documentary Art (Brooklyn), Festival Les Inattendus (Lyon), Sheffield Fringe Documentary Film Festival, 25 FPS (Zagreb), Chicago Underground Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, L’Alternativa Film Festival (Barcelona), Antimatter (Victoria), Experiments in Cinema (Albuquerque), WNDX Festival of Moving Image (Winnipeg, Treaty 1), Athens International Film Festival, and several others.

Richard has curated film and video programs for the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF), Cellular Cinema, and the Walker Art Center. He was the Executive Director of the 10th anniversary Iowa City Documentary Film Festival (IC DOCS) and co-founder of the Works-in-Progress Festival (WiP). He is currently the faculty advisor and founder of Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK’s student-run Inferno Art Collective.

Richard holds a BA in Film Studies from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and a BA in English and Philosophy from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. He received his PhD in Film Studies from the University of Iowa where he was a Crossing Borders Fellow.
