Katherine Adamyk Faculty Profile

Katharine Adamyk

Assistant Professor, Mathematics and Computational Data Science

Katharine Adamyk is an assistant professor of mathematics and computational data science. As an undergraduate, she was drawn to the field of mathematics through classes that demonstrated how creative and open-ended abstract mathematics can be. Now, in her own teaching, Adamyk seeks to create an environment where students can encounter those same facets of math through independent and collaborative problem solving.

Adamyk’s research focuses on the area of algebraic topology. In this field, researchers use operations similar to multiplication or addition to study shapes, including shapes in higher dimensions. During her doctoral studies at the University of Colorado, she focused on theoretical and computational questions in this area. As a postdoctoral associate at the University of Western Ontario, Adamyk also focused on the theoretical foundations of topological methods for clustering data sets. Clustering methods are used to form groups of similar data points (e.g., neurons that often fire together, patients with similar symptoms and prognoses, or friend groups in a social network).

In Adamyk's classes, students might create projects that focus on clustering specific data sets, testing methods of condensing clustering information, or more abstract topics. Adamyk encourages any Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK students with an interest in working on a project in one of these areas to contact her to discuss research opportunities. More information about Adamyk’s teaching and research activities can be found on .
